For my final project, I decided to construct a website showing people how to create a panoramic photo like my previous project in my DIVA class. This is my first time working in Adobe Dreamweaver, so the site will appear to be rather amateur and simple.

George Legrady [IF09]

With a focus on the processing and visualizing data, George Legrady has been contributing as a media artist since the 1980’s. Starting as a photographer, Legrady took several shots of objects being thrown around in a space for his project “Floating Objects.”
This project goes along with Legrady’s other project, “The Catalogue of Found Objects,” which involves the classification of analog black and white shots of everyday objects. The photos were then organized and classified based on their subject matter in a digital fashion. Legrady describes the two projects as the “systematic and poetic sides of the same problematic.”
Another piece that was shown was the piece “Blink.” In this piece, the audience looks at a grid of ten by thirteen. Each box contains an animated image of a human eye. Legrady explains that each box is bound by a certain set of algorithms, meaning each box is “aware” of the surrounding boxes and displays the preset animation depending on the reactions of the boxes around the focal box. As a whole, the piece first gives the audience the idea that the eyes are all blinking in a random formation. But after close observation, the viewer can notice patterns that occur in the piece that systematically leads to all of the eyes being unified. Blink was shown around the world under the different mediums of LCD flat panel screens as well as projections from a projector. Another piece that works around the idea of algorithms is the interactive installation “Cell Tango.” The piece consists of image inputs from cellphones, emails, and online photo archives such as Twitter and Facebook. The images are then visualized based on subject matter, or the tags given to the image when during the upload process. Patterns such as grouping as well as webbing can be seen by the audience from the visualization given on the projector.
Finally, “We Are Stardust” is a two screen projection installation featuring a military grade infrared surveillance camera. For this project, Legrady used the Spitzer Space Telescope to acquire the image of a star chart. The other projection in the piece is of an infrared image of the gallery space. This forces the audience to consider the ideas revolving time and space. One projection shows the viewer the grand and infinite number of the known stars, while the other projection shows the gallery space in which the viewer is located.

Google Earth Project
The narrative for my Google Earth project will be the process of doing my previous Urban Intervention Project.
The following is a list of places I went to for my Urban Intervention project.

Urban Intervention
For my Urban Intervention project, I decided to focus on the issue of drug use and the effects of drug use. Many addicts will often find themselves doing almost anything to achieve the euphoric “high” feeling. To show the effects of drug use I chose to use the marijuana leaf as my urban intervention icon.
I understand that marijuana is technically not considered a type of narcotic in Canada, but I chose it because of its wide known alias, “the gateway drug” as well as the international recognition of marijuana as “bad.” With my cut out vinyl of the marijuana leaf, and some thin strips of red vinyl (you can get this stuff at Canadian Tire, costs around five dollars) I set out to construct my urban intervention project.
After much thought, I decided to seal the vinyls to a car, in a fashion that looks as if someone had smashed the passenger window of the car to break in. At the centre of the impact will be where I will put the marijuana leaf, to show how most of the time, cars get broken into to feed the underground drug trade system.I then took the car all over the lower mainland (including Granville Island), and photographed them.

The other locations will be posted in my Google Earth Project.

Panorama Photo
High Dynamic Range Attempt:
I started by taking 10 different shots using three different exposures, resulting in 30 images.

Different Exposures
Merging to HDR:
I thought about merging the files to HDR in Photoshop before I stitched the files together.

HDR Merged Image
After I merged the files, I realized that the day I took the photographs had slight winds. This caused the leaves in the tree to shift for the three images. This ultimately led to a rainbow like spectrum on the image.

Shifting in the leaves
Stitching the image:
After giving up on the HDR approach, I decided to just use the moderate exposed image to create the panorama.
